As a core discipline in science and engineering, chemistry is critical for solving society's most important problems and making significant positive impacts on human health, energy, and the environment. The department is a vital, expanding hub of scientific inquiry with deep historic roots and a ready grasp on the future. The Department of Chemistry provides leaders in chemistry, chemical biology, and material science. It caters to a large sect of academia, R&D labs, and industries across the world and has established networks with subject specific stalwarts through international and national collaborations. The Department of Chemistry has made a significant impact on the society through academicians, administrators, entrepreneurs, teachers, and scientists in private and government sectors.
The Department of Chemistry provides an opportunity for postgraduate students to obtain a thorough fundamental knowledge of all fields of chemistry. In general, the subject involves inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry as major areas plus other specialized courses such as analytical, biophysical chemistry, advanced materials and spectroscopy. Laboratory experience is provided in inorganic and organic synthesis, analytical methods, physical and chemical measurements, and spectroscopy. The Chemistry Library has an excellent collection of books, journals, and reference materials. In addition to the above, students/in-service faculty members are working towards their Ph.D. degrees who are further sources of scientific information and help. Faculty members are available as academic advisers for consultation/discussion about their courses; they are also willing to discuss chemistry, science, and career opportunities. The best way to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities available in the department is to join as a postgraduate student or as a research student.
